Thanks to Our Local Community for a Great Christmas in McKeon Street!
Trainees
Ash Harrington, our trainee, is about to finish the Certificate IV in Local Mission through the Church Army Global Gap Year Program. As part of his on-the-job training here at Maroubra, he has done well in getting alongside surfers- and others- wanting to know more about Jesus. He has been strategic in supporting young men who suffer from any form of addiction- especially from drugs or alcohol. Next year, he will be based in the public housing community of Airds (Campbelltown). He aims to stay in contact with those of us from Maroubra over the phone and the net, plus visiting us from time to time. We are thinking through doing a partnership with the Airds team, plus possibly another Western suburbs network. The aim would be to help disadvantaged youth experience God's love as we provide surfing adventures for them. However, we need a few more local Maroubra crew to help with such partnerships. We've done it over the past few years, involving aboriginal youth from the local area and Broken Hill. If you'd like to help out let Steve know.
Surfers Community Centre
Providing one has been an issue for several years now. The process has hotted up in recent days. If you'd like more info, or would like to help this project become a reality, contact Steve.
Mental Health Team
Our friends and fellow-workers, Anglicare, have launched a team of Mentors and Carers for those suffering from mental health issues. Of special attention are our local youth, 16 to 24 years of age, who have been mentally damaged by drugs and alcohol. The team is already working alongside local people in the Maroubra to La Perouse areas. If you live locally, and need our help as mentors and carers, please call Steve (0408 804 038) or the Anglicare Regional office on 8362 3700.
